You are cordially invited to a private event photographing orchids at Norman's Orchids & orchids.com (July 19th, Sunday 8am to noon). Our address is 11039 S. Monte Vista Ave, Montclair, CA 91763. It is to your great advantage to bring a flash (preferably hot shoe flash cable). 90% of our flowers are grown in environmentally controlled greenhouses and shaded patio. You will be comfortable at our facility. Our nursery is closed to public on Sunday. Photogs who attend will have a quiet time enjoying orchids' simple elegance. We will do a head count on Friday's meeting on July 18th. Hope to see you here.

I like to share a good example of using a flashlight appropriately will help enhance your floral/macro subjects. The following photos used simply are for illustration of my points.
I encourage our salon members to try some macro photos during our dry season when we just can not get out of our daily routines, yet the photo itch is bugging you to shoot something … Now, I welcome any comments …

Hey, thanks for stopping by, master Xie. You can borrow the 500D as long as your lens has a 77mm thread.
For those people who is not familiar with 500D. It’s basically a magnifying glass that you can attach onto your lens’s front element. You would not have any light loss issue compare to extension tube. And, it reduces the minimum focus distance of your lens to subject. I carry it when I pack light on location (one less Macro lens to carry); or you only do macro occasionally. A 70-200mm & 500 D is a very effective macro combo for occasional use.

I like your photos. The dark background makes the orchids stand out. How can you make the background this dark?

Thanks.
I think the key is to find a background that is much darker than the main subject. Adjusting curves in PS will make the flower stand out.
